A program to give our unborn babies the best start to life, gets
underway at Hungahungatoroa Marae from 23, 24, 25 May, with a follow
up session to be held on 8 June 2017.
Ūkaipo is run by the Western Bay Of Plenty Primary Health Organisation
and is a four day wānanga for hāpu māma who smoke, to become
smokefree. Whanau support is welcome and kai is provided for the four
days. Incentives are provided to encourage engagement and setting of
a quit date. A main incentive is the making of their own wahakura.
This is the third time this program has been delivered locally. Ūkaipo
coordinator Tiana Bennett says ‘the programme is in its pilot stage
and we hope to secure funding to hold more wananga in the upcoming
year. Our aim is to hold two each quarter at different marae around
Ūkaipo is free to any hapu māma who want to become smokefree for the
benefit of themselves and their pēpi. For more information contact
